Fuel Your Illustration says The Hero Business “definitely delivers”

Rondal Scott III of fuelyourillustration.com gives a nice shout-out to The Hero Business on the May 18th edition of Webcomics Wedesdays:

“The Hero Business, much as it sounds, centers around a sort of “image consultant” agency that caters specifically to superheroes. As such a specialized agency, you can only imagine the hijinks that ensue when you mix The Office with Heroes. With such a character-driven concept much of the storyline relies on the strength of its cast and creator Bill Walko definitely delivers. Walko has assembled a cast that is as diverse in their motivations for being in The Hero Business as the situations they find themselves in.

The regular webcomic walks you through an orientation of sorts that acts as a proper introduction the how The Hero Business works as well as providing our perspective character in the form of new recruit Parker Jameson. The best way to dive right in, however, is with Walko’s series of Coffee Break short gags which feature various cast members in a one-off sort of strip that pokes fun at superhero stereotypes with humorous results.”

Rough Mondays: Wendy and Marvin

by Hero Business C.E.O. on May 16, 2011 at 4:33 pm

A little something different for today’s “Rough Monday.” Since Bravado is in the middle of getting a makeover, I thought I’d share a makeover of my own. Remember those goofy junior Superfriends, Wendy & Marvin? It was like the first season of the show, when anti-violence in cartoons prevented the Superfriends from throwing too many punches. They would end up fighting a lot of misguided scientists and their gone-awry experiments. Wendy & Marvin were there for youthful “viewer identification.” And it’s all as terrible as it sounds.

As a challenge to make these guys hip and interesting, I re-imaged them both. Above is the pencil sketch… below is the finished piece. Give yourself a cookie if you can identify the Superfriends-universe villain on the screen!

I got more of these cartoon makeovers if you guys wanna see ’em….

CBR’s “Comics Should Be Good” Spotlights The Hero Business

If you aren’t following Brian Cronin’s blog over at Comic Book Resources, you should be. “Comics Should Be Good” celebrates many wonderful facets of the four-colored world of comics. Throughout May, “Comics Should Be Good” is spotlighting a different webcomic every day. And today, “The Hero Business” got a little PR:

“Today we look at Bill Walko’s The Hero Business, a nifty strip about a company that specializes in supporting superheroes, from marketing, to publicity, to costume design to tech support – pretty much everything! As Bill terms it in his description – “with great power comes great marketability!” And so far in this strip, it also goes hand in hand with great fun!

As Walko describes on the Hero Business website, the idea behind this series comes from the curiosity that peeks out from behind the general suspension of disbelief for stuff like, “how do these superheroes afford all of theirtechnology? Heck, how do some of these heroes afford to live period?”

Hero Business is an all-purposes management firm for superheroes. They supply technology, costume design, publicity and, perhaps most importantly, they handle endorsements and the like (how everything gets paid for).

Naturally, they are kept quite busy by the plentiful amount of superheroes out there. The lovable cast of characters who populate Hero Business include a former supervillain who now is head of research and development, an old school superhero who now works as a consultant for the company (and as a sort of liaison between the company and the hero population) plus a bunch of other “normal” workers. One of these workers is Parker Jameson, the receptionist for the company.

[Brian then shares the first five pages of “The Hero Business”]

Fun stuff, right?

So go check out the site here. Walko does a wonderful job designing the site.”

Thanks, Brian!

Be sure to check out the other webcomic entries for May over at “Comic Book Resources”, too. There’s some great finds!

Rough Mondays: Work Process

by Hero Business C.E.O. on May 9, 2011 at 9:17 am

For today’s “Rough Monday,” here’s a little inside look at how I work. First, I write the strip and figure out the basics of script and balloon placement (this often changes as I go):

Then, I refine the pencils and push the character poses and expressions:

Then I scan the pencils and ink/color digitally with the sent-from-heaven Wacom Tablet.

And, done! You can see the final results here.

Boston Comic-Con Commissions

by Hero Business C.E.O. on May 1, 2011 at 11:36 pm

Just got home from the wicked awesome Boston Comic-Con. Here’s the commissions I did during the show, captured by my iPhone. (sorry they’re not scan-quality!)

If any fans some across scans of these pieces online, let me know! I’d love to get clearer images to capture some of the details….

“Harry Potter” First commission of Boston Comic-Con

“Scarlet Witch”  – the classic version!

“The Vision”… the same person that requested Scarlet Witch then wanted the Vision…. so I wanted him “floating on air” over the thought of Wanda…

‎”Oracle” … I had to include the Nightwing plushie

“Sentry”… I wanted him to look crazy and angry, like he always does….

‎”Superboy”  – 90s style! Loved this era.

Sunday morning sketch cards, from Boston Comic-Con…. Batgirl, Supergirl, Wonder Girl, Donna Troy, Harley Quinn, Kitty Pryde and Phoenix

Joker’s Daughter sketch

A Wonder Girl and Ravager commission. I wanted to capture their relationship in one visual image. ; )

Iceman and Northstar  — evidently, Northstar had “the hots” for Iceman in the 90s, but failed to melt his heart…

Supergirl commission

By request, a “Princess Superhero” character for someone’s niece, to hang in her bedroom…. I wanted to make it super cute

A fan wanted a meeting between 10-year-old Dick Grayson Robin and present-day surly Boy Wonder, Damian Wayne.

A fun last piece for the con!

Thanks everyone!
